What is Bone DEXA?
A Bone DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a specialized imaging test used to measure bone density. It helps doctors assess your risk of osteoporosis, fractures, and bone loss. Using low-level X-rays, DEXA provides accurate information about your bone health in areas like the spine, hip, or wrist. The test is quick, painless, and highly reliable in detecting early bone weakening.
Why is Bone DEXA Important?
Bone DEXA scans help track bone health over time, monitor response to treatments, and detect osteoporosis early — before fractures occur. They are one of the most effective ways to protect long-term bone strength and prevent complications.
Basic Bone DEXA Tests:
Spine DEXA Scan – measures density in the lower spine
Hip DEXA Scan – assesses risk of hip fractures
Forearm/Wrist DEXA Scan – used when hip or spine cannot be tested
Whole Body DEXA Scan – evaluates total bone health and body composition
What to Expect:
You will lie on a scanning table while a low-dose X-ray passes over your body. The test is safe, painless, and usually completed within 10–15 minutes. The results are reviewed by a radiologist, who interprets your bone density and shares recommendations for treatment or preventive care.
