PFT (Pulmonary Function Test)

What is PFT?

Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) are non-invasive diagnostic tests that measure how well your lungs are working. They evaluate lung volume, capacity, airflow, and gas exchange to help detect respiratory disorders. PFTs provide essential information for diagnosing lung diseases and monitoring treatment effectiveness.

Why is PFT Important?

PFTs are crucial for detecting and managing a wide range of lung conditions. They can diagnose problems such as scleroderma, sarcoidosis, restrictive airway issues, scoliosis-related breathing problems, asbestosis, chronic allergies, and general respiratory difficulties. Even healthy individuals may undergo PFTs as part of a routine check-up to ensure strong lung health.

Basic PFT Test Components:

Spirometry – measures airflow and how much air you can inhale and exhale

Lung Volume Tests – check the total capacity of your lungs

Diffusion Capacity (DLCO) – measures how well oxygen passes from lungs into blood

Gas Exchange Analysis – evaluates how efficiently gases move in and out of the lungs

What to Expect:

During the PFT, you will sit comfortably and use a sterile mouthpiece connected to a testing device. You’ll be asked to breathe in and out in different patterns while your doctor monitors for any signs of dizziness, shortness of breath, or discomfort. The test is safe, painless, and usually takes 30–60 minutes. Results help your doctor create a tailored treatment plan for your respiratory health.
